I Love Feeding Raw, But There Are Drawbacks!

I know I have not posted anything on here in a really long time; so I figured it was time for an update. :)

I LOVE FEEDING RAW!!

If you can find the right stuff to feed, it can be really simple and so much better for your dog. I fed raw for well over a year....until now. :(

There are a few drawbacks with feeding raw that I will admit to you. It is expensive! However, if you are buying a really good quality dog food that is $40 or more and getting two bags a month to total $80 or more than it is the same price as feeding raw. The other drawback is that you have to have a separate fridge/freezer to keep your dog food in. Ok, you don't have to, but it helps! The last drawback has to do with that. I live in the north where it gets really cold and my fridge/freezer happens to be in my garage; so when it gets really cold it stops working. Its pretty hard to defrost something when its the same temp as outside.

So I hate to say it, but because of the nuisance and cost, I'm back to dog food. :( I did however find a really decent dog food at Costco that is reasonably priced. I also hate to say that my boy has never looked better! Crazy as it may sound, especially coming from me. I have noticed something though, going back to dog food. My dogs cannot get enough water! My boy has actually gotten so obsessed with water that he tries to start fights with his sister over it. (He never had that problem before.)

Would I go back to raw in a heart beat if I could fix some of the drawbacks? Yes!

Do I really like the dry dog food they are on now? Yes!

Tough decisions....

Leftovers!

Sometimes I like to feed leftover because I don't like to waste and my dogs love it! This is mashed potatoes with broccoli cheese soup, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Yummy! :)

What I Feed

I just realized that I have never really said much about what I feed Mikko.

After going through several different kinds of dog food when he started to develop his allergies, I decided that I wanted to simplify what I was feeding him. Therefore, I decided that I wanted to try raw!

After doing lots of research and talking with my dog trainer and eventually my holistic vet, I jumped right in and started feeding raw. It was a slow learning process for me and honestly very scary at first. I thought that my dogs were not going to eat their food properly and were going to choke on the bones I was giving them. My dogs proved me wrong; I forgot the simple fact that they are first and foremost animals. I still to this day love watching them eat because you can tell they love it!

I like to think I have my own version of several types of raw diets; therefore instead of just writing a list of what I feed, I thought it might be interesting to see what I feed! Bon appetit! :)

Big Oops!

I took Mikko to the Renaissance festival a couple of weekends ago. I was nervous about the crowds and other dogs that might be there; but he did awesome! He loved the attention that everyone gave him! And some of the comments I got were hilarious! "He has a fat head!" LOL! Well yeah, he is 98lbs; what do you expect!?

I had to have my usual turkey leg while I was there and the lady asked if my dog could also have a treat for free and of course I said yes! So she comes back with two turkey legs; one for me and one for Mikko. I thought "Sweet!" he will LOVE this! So I picked off a bunch of turkey for him and he loved it and went about our day at the Renaissance festival.

Well the next day I remember that he is allergic to turkey! I thought that I was a bad mom for forgetting that he is allergic to turkey and relieved that he had no serious allergic reactions yet. Over the next week he broke out in the worst hot spots I have ever seen him have. They were huge, raised and swollen! My poor little big guy!

I got my friend that does the NAET thing and she treated him for his turkey allergy and so far so good! He looks better already! And now he has been eating turkey for the past two days without any hot spots. Yay!

I'll try and remember to get some photos up here of him lately. He looks better than he ever has!

Therapy Dog!

I know this has nothing to do with my blog but I just wanted to share that my little big guy Mikko is a certified Therapy Dog now!

So that means that MY PIT BULL IS A THERAPY DOG!!!!!!! :)

That is one thing checked off my list of showing everyone that pit bulls are awesome dogs!

What he looks like today

Here is what my poor boy looks like these days. I think I have most of his food allergies taken care of; so these are environmental. He is allergic to all types of things: dust, flowers, pollen, and so much more.

NAET Part 2

Here is how she tests what he is allergic to:
I will usually bring in something I want her to test for or she has little glass vials of different substances to also test him for. So for example when I switched him to a raw diet so I could control what he was ingesting better I was giving him mostly beef because it's easy. Well after a few days he had a bad reaction and all his spots got really red and huge, covering the whole underside of his belly! So we decided that we should test him for a beef allergy. To test him, I held a vial of beef substance in one of my hands and place it against his body. Then I held my arm straight out and she pushed down on my arm. If my arm had not gone down then he was not allergic to it. But my arm did go down and the lower my arm went the more he was allergic to it.

Here is how she treats what he is allergic to:
She started by opening up my back with a back massager because his energy will flow through me and the point is to make his body realize that whatever we are treating him for is OK to be in his body. Then I held the same vial against his body for 20 minutes. He calms down and gets sleepy during this time. After that he just had to stay away from beef for 24 hours and then he could have it after that.

I know this stuff sounds pretty far out there, but I swear it is true and it works! After the 24 hours after that treatment his redness was gone! I wish I would have taken picture of that time in particular because it was amazing with the difference!

My guy has many more allergies to treat for and that have yet to come up but I believe in this and I'm lucky to have a friend that is doing this for me! Thanks my friend! I will forever be in your debt! You have changed mine and my dog's life forever!
